Hello, Bonita!
Let’s talk about journaling! But wait—before you roll your eyes, thinking this is yet another reminder about the benefits of keeping a journal, trust me—I’m not here to tell you what you already know. Journaling is amazing, but the hard part? Actually starting. Almost every healthy habit feels that way, right? It seems daunting and unattainable at first. But today, I’m sharing a technique that is so simple it feels like a hack—though I don’t really like that word.
When it comes to starting new habits, like working out or journaling, we tend to see the task itself as the challenge. In reality, it’s the habit of doing it that trips us up. Think about it. Going to the gym? That’s hard. But sometimes, just getting there—mentally and physically—is the hardest part. It’s all about setting your mindset. This is the same when starting a journaling routine.
So, here’s my solution: start with just one word a day. Yep, you heard me right. At the end of each day, take a pause, breathe deeply, and think of one word that best defines your day. Write it down. It’s that simple.
Why One Word Works
First, you’re building the habit of stopping, reflecting, and writing something—anything. This small action is already a big step if you’re just getting started. Second, to pick that one word, you’ll naturally replay your day in your mind. You’ll reflect on what stood out to you, without the pressure of writing full sentences. And guess what? That’s the essence of journaling—reflecting and analyzing your day.
By starting small, you’re easing yourself into the habit. Over time, that one word will turn into a sentence, maybe even a few. Before you know it, journaling will feel natural. You might even get creative with it—perhaps you’ll start adding a quote, a doodle, or even a photo that represents your day. Remember, journaling isn’t just about writing. It’s about documenting your life in a way that resonates with you.
The Takeaway
Don’t let the idea of journaling overwhelm you. Start small, start simple. Build the habit with one word, and watch how it evolves. If you love writing, eventually, you’ll find yourself writing more. But if you don’t, no worries! Find what works for you, whether it’s a word, a drawing, or a memory captured in a photo.
I hope this inspires you to get started. And hey, if you’re curious about my own journaling journey, come hang out with me on YouTube! I share my tips and experiences, and I’d love for you to join the conversation.
Until next time, bonita, keep it simple and start with that one word.
